Betting Steffen is useless and everyone who knows him knows this too. He always wins, no matter what the bet is about. His colleagues already learnt not to waste money and effort in betting against Steffen. Believe it or not, it´s actually one of the unofficial rules of the sixth squad. But there is still something thrilling in breaking this rule and Serge took the risk. If he loses, it wouldn´t be the first time but if he wins, his name shall be never forgotten…

“So, it should be like this, right?” Steffen asked form his little wood stick pyramid. He was preparing the wood for fire like Jayden taught him before, creating a small fireplace.

“Don´t give him advices!” Serge warned other guys threateningly. Chances to win the bet against Steffen were low enough without Max or Jayden helping the white haired boy.

“I wasn´t asking them,” Steffen complained. “I was just talking to myself.” He pouted when fixing the wood. Concentration created cute small wrinkle on his nose and he intently stared into wood, ignoring other guys. Max watched him for a moment before turning to his fishing rod again.

“Whatever,” he said carelessly. “Keep trying. We can turn up our own bet in the meantime. Whoever catches the most fishes can drive Serge´s crappy excuse for a car on way home.” Hearing his friend, Serge killed Max with a glare.

“Hey! Could you stop insulting my car?” he groaned angrily. Max only shrugged.

“It´s not a car, that´s what I´ m saying,” he retorted calmly, ignoring the vein which started to pulse on Serge´s forehead.

“And what it is? Really fat bicycle?”

“Come on,” Jayden sighed. It was time to stop the useless argue. “Don´t insult bicycles.” Or maybe it wasn´t. But Steffen´s whining saved the day.

“It´s so hard,” he moaned tiredly. Rubbing two sticks together didn´t create any sparks and Steffen´s hands were starting to hurt. But Serge had no compassion with him.

 “So you give up?”

“Of course not,” Steffen shook his head. He repositioned the stacks and started again. It only took few minutes before stacks started to smoke. “Look!” Steffen cried out.

“Impossible,” Serge cursed under his breath and went to have a closer looks. But there was no doubt, Steffen´s branches were already covered in smoke and he quickly put them under the fireplace and started blowing air on hot wood. Steffen kept blowing on it until fire grew bigger enough to burn on its own. Pushing sweated hair out of his face, Steffen grinned happily.

“I can´t wait to meet Nick,” he remarked innocently.

 * * * * *

Some cursing, fish grilling and eating later, all guys returned to fishing bet. Soon, everyone except Jayden caught at least one fish. Glaring at his fishing rod, Jayden frowned in annoyance. He didn´t catch fishes often, but he wasn´t a newbie like Steffen or complete loser like Serge. If wasn´t fair for him to lose this bet.

“What´s the problem with those fishes?” he complained aloud. “I use same worms like you and they just ignore it.”

“Fishing is also about the technique of cranking the rod,” Steffen stated calmly. “What?” he asked when all eyes turned to him in disbelief. “I read it in online fishers´ handbook.”

Serge just raised his eyebrows and shook his head. He could have expected Steffen to do thoughtful online research of camping. It was kind of funny that he knew it only from reading through. Suddenly, Max´s rod twitched.

“Hey! Someone has a lucky day!” Max yelled. Grinning like a maniac, he jumped up and fought the rod. ”Whoa, honey. Come to daddy~“  Arrogantly, he reeled the line and leant the rod against his waist. The line cut through the surface of lake and tensed, the fish struggling on the other hand. But Max managed to pull it out anyway, like he was born as fisher.

“I hate fishing,” Jayden groaned. He leant his face against his palm and sulked. His chances to win the bet were quickly going downhill. Not that driving Serge´s crap car would be great prize, but it was still better than being stuck in back seats with hyperactive Steffen. Suddenly, his own rod moved.

“Look! Jay has something!” Steffen exclaimed only to be harshly shushed by Jayden. Jay climbed up to his feet and flexed his bad leg a bit to relax the muscles. He was squeezing the rod so hard that his knuckles whitened and intently stared into water.

“Come on,” he hummed under his breath angrily. “I´m not letting you go.” Carefully, Jayden reeled the line and froze every time the fish pulled back. He almost forgot to breath but after minute of struggle, the fish hung on hook on front of him. “Finally,” Jayden exhaled in relief and grabbed the fish.

“Using the words of classic, you reached the beginner level,” Max commented his friends performance.

 “Screw yourself.”

“I´d love to, but Reiner refused to come on this trip.” Guys turned to Max openmouthed. Punk cop raised his pierced eyebrows. “What? Ever saw me not have the last word?”

“Be glad he didn´t come,” Jay snapped back. “If heard how you´re talking about him, he would kill you.” Max grinned on him and stuck his hands in pockets. Knowing his best friend well, Jayden recognized the grin and glared even before Max opened his mouth.

“Nah, you´re just being jealous,” Max purred. “Cause you´re not my number one anymore.” He pulled his hands out of the pockets and reached to hug Jayden. “Don´t be sad, honey. You´ll always have special place in my heart.”

Jayden broke from the hug and made gagging noise. Tolerance was one thing, listening to Max´s blabbing was another one. But his attempts to change (ignore) the topic came in vain.

“Do you have last word with Reiner too?” Serge asked with a smirk. Even the idea of uptight captain letting someone else boss him around was bizarre. Through, Max was famous for his stubbornness and personal charm. Said Max scratched his nose before answering.

“Sometimes,” he trailed off thoughtfully. It looked like he was going to continue, but Steffen´s yell interrupted him. Momentarily forgotten by others, white haired cop prepared new worm, cranked the rod and caught a fish.

“I got it!” he cried out. “I got another one!” Eagerly smiling, Steffen pulled on the line. Previous argument forgotten, other guys all turned to Steffen and cheered him.

“Just pull it out carefully so it doesn´t escape you,” Serge lectured him knowingly. He watched the boy to struggle with rod.

Question for readers: Do you want short updates more often (once a week or more) or long updates less often(twice a month or less)?”

This story is usually collaboration between me and :iconflirtingwithinsanity: as we write chapter is turns (more or less). For now it seems that I´ll be writing it alone, but hopefully, the cowriter joins us soon.

:bulletblack: OF COURSE Steffen won.  I don't think anyone would ever thing that Serge (with his bad luck) would ever possibly beat Steffen in a bet.  :D
:bulletblack: Poor Jayden.  I don't like fishing either.
