 ´Sometimes the only pay of
For having any faith
Is when it´s tested again and again
Everyday!´
(Fall Out Boy – Immortals)

“… just not for long for long. We could be immo-o-o-o-rtals.”

Rene reached to the dashboard and turned the radio off. Tiredly, he turned his head from side to side, trying to relieve some tension from his neck.

“Any plans for weekend?” Steffen asked from the passenger seat. He was playing with his cell phone like usually, barely paying attention to the traffic around.

“Nothing specific,” Rene shrugged. He lazily tapped his fingers on the wheel and glanced to tachometer. They were almost at the end of evening shift, bored with traffic at the edge of the city. Steffen reached to the radio but Rene slapped his hand away without even moving his eyes from the road. “What about you?”

Steffen chuckled and nervously turned his cell phone in his hand. “Maybe dinner or two…” he trailed off. Rene sighed and rubbed his eyes.

“With anyone I know?” he asked suspiciously. Steffen blushed.

“I swear I´ll introduce you one day. Maybe…” he looked out of window, so he didn´t see Rene squeezing the wheel so hard that his knuckles turned white.

If only you knew… Rene thought grimly. Crimelord´s order didn´t seem to be enough to keep Jack away from Steffen. Serge´s threats did even less good. What could force damned Mafioso to stop playing with Steffen? Well aimed bullet? That bastard!

“Lights off,” Steffen noted suddenly, pointing to a car which passed in the opposite direction. “Turn it around, I wanna do at least something useful tonight.”

“Roger, boss,” Rene joked and turned to lower gear. He braked and turned the wheel in sharp U-turn to get into opposite direction. As soon as their police lancer slipped into correct lane, Rene turned on the siren and pressed the speed pedal to the floor. Chase was short and boring and Rene lazily leant on the wheel while Steffen went to tell off the guilty driver.

Out of reflex, Rene watched Steffen in case the younger cop needed his help. He almost didn´t notice the black Mercedes coming from the opposite direction until the car slowed down and blinked on him. Rene turned in his seat so abruptly that he almost dislocated his neck to see car´s number.

“Oh, fuck you!” he hissed under his breath and stamped on reverse gear. Panther lancer shot backwards, leaving surprised Steffen staring at it. Rene turned the wheel and switched to higher gear, turning around again. Brake, clutch, gear switched and speed pedal. The car immediately accelerated and Rene stood from speed to clutch and back, switching to higher gear and speeding up. Within seconds, he shook off tiredness and straightened up behind the wheel. Speed to floor and overtake the car in front of himself. Higher gear. He didn´t bother with sirens. This was personal chase. Rene grinned. This was fun. He could feel the adrenaline rushing through his veins, waking him up. Overtake the car. Avoid the truck in the opposite direction. Higher gear and number on the tachometer flying up. Faster. Clutch and speed pedal.

It took him less than twenty seconds to be at Mercedes´ tail. Rene teasingly pressed and relaxed the speed pedal. Pity that Panthers´ high-tech engines were too silent to roar. Mercedes speeded up too and Rene darkly smirked.

“As you wish,” he hummed under his breath and speeded up too, chasing the Mercedes towards the hills. His mobile rang but Rene just turned it off without looking at it and threw it at passenger´s seat. He could explain to Steffen later.

Soon, the road will curl into serpentines. It won´t matter how well Jack knew to drive, he couldn´t know these twists better than Rene did. And Rene knew them well enough, maybe too well since he almost killed himself and his colleague in one of these turns as a newbie. He laughed when the Mercedes speeded up, trying to shake the police car off in dangerous turns. “Not today…”

Rene switched to lower gear, knowing that he wouldn´t cut the turn in this speed. He slipped between two cars in ahead and continued to overtake right after the turn. He pressed the clutch and switched to higher gear again to gain some time on the straight part of road before braking at the start of next turn.

And here it was. The turn where he almost ended under a trunk in the opposite direction. Rene firmly twisted his fingers around the wheel. He speeded up at the very beginning of the turn. Lower gear to compensate the upward slope of the road. Weight on speed pedal. Wheel turned and brakes down to floor. Balance the car, clutch and lower gear again, speed pedal down. Accelerate. And overtaking. Rene expected the lights of a car in opposite direction so he turned his head down a bit to avoid being blinded by them. He slipped into the opposite lane, turning the wheel as left as he could, almost scratching the side against the stone wall. He managed to press the Panther between guardrails and passing car, gaining few precious seconds to Mercedes. Right after the turn, he slipped back into his lane and switched to higher hear again. The road split into two-lane and Rene pressed the speed to floor to get on the same level with black Mercedes. He put his blinker on to warn Jack before turning the wheel a bit left and then sharply right. If Jack didn´t turn right to the rest area, Rene would crash into his car from left side.

“Game over,” Rene chuckled to himself and followed the Mercedes, practically cutting its way off. Both cars stopped with engines on in the empty resting area. Rene unfastened the belt before completely stopping and now jumped out of car, storming right to Mercedes´ driver´s seat. He bumped his fist on the driver´s window so hard that the glass trembled in the frame and waited for Jack to pull the window down.

“Hello, Rene,” Jack greeted him in falsely friendly tune, casually leaning against the window frame. Rene immediately leant into the car through the window, unfastening Jack´s belt before opening the door and pulling Jack out.

“What didn´t you understand about letting Steffen alone?!” Rene roared, squeezing Jack´s collar. He pressed the other man to the side of car, locking him in the place with arm pressed against criminal´s throat. “Since when you ignore even crimelord´s orders, hm? What a watchdog you are!”

“Nice to see you too,” Jack retorted sweetly, winking on Rene. The cop tossed him against the car again.

“David told you to stay back,” Rene growled. “Don´t you even care about your boss´s orders anymore? I know that threats mean nothing to you, but you used to obey the orders at least.” He let go of Jack´s collar and angrily stepped back. There was really no point in threatening Jack. That would be just waste of words.

“Crimelord wishes for safety of Black Panther squad,” Jack retorted with innocent smile. “And I mean no harm to Steffen.”

“You´ll play with him, you´ll get bored and then you´ll just throw him away. I´m telling you, put your hands of Steffen before you´ll break his heart, or I´ll break you something.” Okay. Not-threatening was harder than planned. Jack indulgently smiled at Rene.

“My dear, who said that I would get bored? You cops can be pretty interesting.”

Rene flinched forward but stopped himself before he would punch Jack. That wouldn´t work either. But what would? “I know that reason means nothing to you, and so do threats,” he started, trying to control himself. “So I´m just asking you, stay away from Steffen. He´s not like you. Just leave him alone before he gets hurt. Or I´ll make sure to tell crimelord how much you value his orders.” Rene took a step forward, leaning face to face with Jack. “All you have is your title in the underworld, King of Assassins,” Rene purred. “Without it, you would be nobody. I´m sure that you don´t want to lose crimelord´s trust, right?” Jack didn´t retort, but his eyes narrowed for a second and Rene laughed. “Do you?” he joked, smiling victoriously. “That´s what you´re scared off, your majesty. You have only your place in the underworld, nothing else. Be careful not to lose it.” Rene grinned again and stepped back.

“You are not my boss,” Jack said quietly when Rene turned away. “You can be whoring yourself with him, but it doesn´t give you right to give orders to anyone. Whatever he lets you believe to, you have no influence over the underworld, kitten.”

Rene bit into his lip but fought off the urge to turn back to Jack. He walked to his car and sat at the driver´s seat. He was breathing through his nose to stay calm, but his hands shook with anger when he switched to reverse gear and backed out from the rest area. Whatever Jack said, it didn´t matter. He finally knew that the coldblooded Mafioso had a weak spot. Jack was a part of the underworld. No matter how he became part of it, it was too late for him to leave.

Seems that getting rid of Jack won´t be so easy.:) What do you want next? Some couple-time for Jack and Steffen or more conspiracy of Freddy planning to take over the Mafia?:eyes:
